Meaning Making in Real Time: Igniting the Fire Over the Wire

Abstract

What do you do when it is time for making meaning with stakeholder interviews, no funding for a big two- or three-day Summit, and stakeholders are spread across the country? The Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network (POLF/VCNN) and its local affiliate Volunteer Centers chose to use WebEx for a one-day session during their Appreciative Inquiry strategic planning effort. At the end of seven hours of virtual meaning-making, the consultants, POLF/VCNN staff and Volunteer Center participants had created highly energizing provocative propositions and a powerful new vision statement re-connecting participants to the essence of what they do.
