Designing Research with a Positive Lens

Abstract

The choice of method has a critical effect on the kind of study researchers conduct and the kind of knowledge elicited. Research with a Positive Lens connotes a distinctive perspective. In this article, we highlight two central archetypes of strength-based research methods, and explore their potential effects. Many are familiar with Appreciative Inquiry and Positive Organizational Scholarship, but fewer are acquainted with the differences between them and their consequent effect on inquiry and knowledge building. Researchers who wish to apply either one as a research method ought to know their unique capabilities.

Michel Avital is an Associate Professor of Information Management at the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on information and organisation with an emphasis on the social aspects of information technologies. He has published articles on topics such as information sys- tems design, creativity, knowledge sharing, social responsibility and Appreciative Inquiry.

Danielle Zandee is an Associate Professor at Nyenrode Business Universiteit. She studies and facilitates organisational development and change from an affirmative, discursive and collabo- rative perspective. She writes about organisational generativity, the poetics of organisational design, positive textual deviance as a vehicle for change, and the generative dimensions of Appreciative Inquiry.
