The Positive Core of Engagement

The Project SOAR and ALPHA Stories

Abstract

What do you do when restless teenage boys find little hope and meaning in academics, and where meaning for them is found outside school? Working with cement, using learning stories and showing leadership and team work in a community project helped 15-yearolds in Singapore be more ready for school-based instruction and go on to do well in national exams. Positive change methods such as narrative practices and Appreciative Inquiry were key.
